When using a nasal pillow mask while undergoing CPAP therapy, the chin strap helps keep the mouth closed during sleep. This is necessary because the pressure delivered from the CPAP device may cause the mouth to open, especially if the patient is prescribed to use it at a higher setting. Air leaks can also severely reduce the effectiveness of CPAP treatment, which may cause the patient to wake up with a dry mouth or may wake up feeling tired or groggy. Another option to consider to eliminate mouth breathing during sleep is to use a full face CPAP mask that covers both the nose and mouth.
